USS Gudgeon was built in America in 1953. After World War II, as one of the first submarines with high stance and strike power, it served in the US Navy for 30 years and was delivered to the Turkish Naval Forces on September 30, 1983, after which the Turkish flag was hoisted in California. TCG Hızır Reis, which served for 21 years and ended its active service on February 9, 2004, was structured as a museum ship by the Naval Command and began to be exhibited on the coast of İzmit on October 29, 2004.
